The Story Behind Kinfolks Cutlery:
Kinfolks Cutlery was established in 1926 by the Case family cousins, Russ Case, Tint Champlin, and Dean J. Case, to fulfill the rising demand for high-quality fixed-blade knives. Located in Little Valley, New York, the company quickly gained a reputation for its durable and reliable products, becoming a significant player in the American cutlery industry.
The founders brought a wealth of experience to the table: Russ Case was a visionary leader at W.R. Case & Sons, Tint Champlin was a respected executive at Cattaraugus Cutlery, and Dean J. Case excelled in sales and production management. Together, they forged a legacy that would endure through generations.
During World War II, Kinfolks Cutlery played a crucial role in supplying military knives, producing over 120,000 M-3 and M-4 bayonets. This commitment to quality and craftsmanship solidified Kinfolks’ place in American history as a trusted manufacturer of knives for both civilian and military use.
Today, Kinfolks Cutlery is celebrated not only for its historical significance but also for the craftsmanship that goes into each knife. Collectors and enthusiasts continue to seek out Kinfolks knives, ensuring that the legacy of this iconic brand lives on.
Kinfolks Cutlery History: The Legacy of the Case & Champlin Families
Kinfolks Knives traces its heritage to the Case and Champlin families, two pioneering names in American cutlery. Beginning in the early 1800s with Job Case, the family’s legacy grew through decades of craftsmanship, innovation, and entrepreneurial drive. By the late 19th century, the Case brothers, Champlins, and Platts families built multiple influential cutlery companies across New York and Pennsylvania — including Case Brothers, Cattaraugus Cutlery, C. Platts & Sons, and W.R. Case & Sons.
In 1926, Russ Case and Tint Champlin founded Kinfolks, a brand dedicated to producing top‑quality fixed blade knives and razors for America’s growing outdoor, military, and sporting needs. Under the leadership of Dean Case, Kinfolks became a trusted supplier throughout World War II, manufacturing thousands of M3 trench knives and M4 bayonets for the U.S. military.
Throughout the mid‑20th century, the Case family continued to influence American knife making through innovation, new manufacturing processes, and industry leadership. After changing hands and surviving factory closures, the Kinfolks name was revived in 2007 and officially returned to the family in 2008. In 2010, “Kinfolks Knives” was published to preserve this remarkable story.
Today, Kinfolks remains a symbol of American craftsmanship, family legacy, and over 200 years of knife‑making tradition.
