How WWII Transformed Kinfolks Into a Military Supplier
During WWII, Kinfolks adapted its production to supply military knives, significantly impacting its legacy.
During World War II, Kinfolks Cutlery took on one of the most intense and important
production periods in its history. Demand from the U.S. military surged, and the company
became a critical supplier of blades for American soldiers.
Massive Military Output
Kinfolks produced:
- Over 120,000 M‑3 and M‑4 bayonets
- 50,000 fighting knives
- Additional military field knives and equipment
These numbers come directly from the historical letters.
Challenges During the War - Material shortages (especially brass) affected designs.
- Workers faced long hours and increased demand.
- After a fire in 1941, production temporarily shifted to Cattaraugus Cutlery
facilities.
Dean Case’s Leadership
Dean managed wartime logistics, including sales, supply chain, and workforce
management. His leadership helped Kinfolks earn two Navy “E” Awards for excellence.
WWII not only strengthened the brand — it created some of the most collectible Kinfolks
knives ever made.
